We come back to Chance Creek and revisit the Halls in this quick read. Navy SEAL Ben Warren has been injured and forced to retire. Instead of heading home he takes up Mason Hall’s invitation to come to Chance Creek. Mason and fellow SEAL Dan as well as Mason’ brothers all know how difficult the transition to civilian life can be. Ben however has got a whole lot of self-pity and hate going on though. He doesn’t feel like he is a whole man anymore. Mason makes him a bet, if he asks a woman to the Fall Festival Dance and actually dances with her then he can have an old gun that Mason has.
Enter single mother Caitlyn Cross who has suffered the small town gossip that follows a single mother who won’t tell who the father is. Caitlyn is convinced that no man is going to want her. She actually meets Ben when her aunt and her are at the local restaurant and she is rude to him when he asks her out. She thinks it’s because her aunt is telling him to and he thinks she is rude because he is handicapped which she didn’t even notice.
These two butt heads a lot because of their own preconceived notions about themselves and the opposite sex. However once they get over themselves the romance is so sweet. Ben loves Caitlyn and is more than ready to be a husband and father. I really enjoyed this story because both characters are strong even if they are wrong about things. IT also gave me a chance to revisit a few of my favorite characters.
