Ryder by LA CASEY
Series: Slater Brothers #4
Genres: Contemporary Romance
Branna Murphy is broken. For months now she has been a part of a one-sided relationship to a man she loves more than life itself. She prayed for a miracle, and hoped something would change, but found that was wishful thinking.
Talking didn’t work. Shouting didn’t work. Crying didn’t work. Nothing bloody worked.
Ryder Slater is furious. For months now he has been lying to a woman he would take a bullet for in order to protect her. He is involved in something that goes deeper than his old past, and if he strays off target, people will start to die. People he loves.
He couldn’t talk. He couldn’t slip up. He couldn’t lose focus. He couldn’t do a damn thing.
Things between Ryder and Branna are at rock bottom, and Ryder knows it. Not only will he be taking on a force that could destroy his whole family, but he will be battling tooth and nail to save his relationship and keep the love of his life by his side.
Ryder targeted Branna from the first moment he saw her, and what Ryder targets, Ryder dominates.
I have waited for Ryder and Branna’s story for a while. I am completely hooked on the entire Slater series. It is such a wonderful series and I love how all of guys lives are woven with the women. I have been a bit suspicious of Ryder for a while now and throughout the last couple of books it has been clear that he has pulled away from Branna. I felt so sorry for her and really hated Ryder but there is a point in this point when I began to feel for Ryder and fall in love with him again.
Ryder and Branna met before all the other couples. They are both the oldest in their family and each has had to raise their sibling or siblings. They are the responsible ones and very much like the parents of the group. In fact there is a moment when Dominic is apologizing and Branna says something ugly and he stands there reminding me of a child asking her to take it back. It really showed how much the younger brothers have come to love and depend on Branna. She has simply come to the point where she has to save herself regardless of her love for Ryder.
Ryder is failing in the wind. He is doing what he feels is right to protect not only his family but also Branna and that has led him to the real possibility of losing his soul mate. He knows that he has been a douche (that’s putting it lightly) but feels that is the only way. When Branna finally stands up for herself I love how Ryder takes it. It is simply great and reminded so much of the Ryder that we met in the first book.
There is just so much to enjoy about this series and that a few flashbacks to the beginning of their relationship is great. In book one they are simply together and we don’t know much about how that happened or see them evolve as a couple. This helps make the story much more realistic. The big event that takes place in this book couldn’t have been more perfect. He showed a side of Ryder that I didn’t know existed and was perfect.
LA Casey has written a series where each one is like checking in with old friends. You are drawn to the characters and simply want to know what is going on in their lives. You find yourself, at times, rooting for them, laughing out loud, crying, and yelling at them. Each person brings something to the family they have and it makes them stronger than ever.
Ash growled. “You have five-seconds.”
I stood up and quickly scurried around to the other side of our work counter, and placed my hands in front of my chest.
“Ash,” I warned, my voice low. “Don’t even think about it.”
He rounded the station and advanced on me, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Don’t!” I said firmly, hoping my no-bullshit-demeanour would give him reason to stop.
It didn’t, if anything, it only fuelled the freak to come at me faster.
“No!” I shrieked and made a move to dive behind the counter but Ash was too fast, and caught me mid-air.
He set me down, and full on assaulted my sides with his fingertips as he tickled me. I laughed, shrieked some more, and did the strangest moves known to man as I made my bid to escape the terror.
“Mercy!” I laughed. “For the love of God, mercy!”
Ash pulled back on his tickling but kept hold of me as I steadied myself and came down from my laughing high. I was about to playfully sucker punch him and make a run for the break room when I heard my name being… bellowed.
